How to Choose the Best Yoga Paddle Board – Buying Guide



Purchasing a Stand Up Paddle Board is a big descion as it’s an investment, and you want to ensure that you are buying one that fits what you want to do with it, your body type and the kind of water you’ll be using it on.

My guide will help you to narrow down your choices and tick a few boxes. 


Board Length

When paddle boarding, you want a narrower board with a pointer nose for speed. A shorter board makes it easy to turn.  For yoga, you are looking for a stable and wide board with the most amount of surface space to move around and go through your poses. You’re not looking for speed. A longer wider board is best for yoga SUP.


Weight Capacity

It’s important to choose a board with a high weight capacity. It makes the board more stable and as you shift from positions there’s less likelihood of ending up in the water! A higher weight capacity also gives the board more versatility and allows you to take another person or even your dog with you. 


Inflatable vs Rigid SUP’s

There’s quite a bit of noticeable difference between an epoxy rigid board and an inflatable board. 


1. Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards

Inflatable boards have come such a long way. They are very stable in the water, and so easy to transport. Super quick to inflate and of course will fit inside your car. You can even take them easily on an airplane or on your boat. The convenience can’t be beat.  Inflatable SUP’s are very durable and won’t get scratched or dinged easily. 


2. Rigid Epoxy Boards

These boards have the best glide through the water, and are a premium board. However, they are more difficult to transport, and can easily be damaged by knocking them against hard surfaces, coral etc. 

If you don’t live on the water youre going to be paddle boarding in, you’ll need a roof rack to transport the rigid board. 


Comfort

Comfort for a yoga board is very important. I speak from first-hand experience. An hour of doing yoga can be really uncomfortable is the decking is not comfortable on your hands and knees. It has to be non-slip, but the decking can’t be rough. 

You’re looking for a soft covering that won’t irritate your skin with contact and the pressure you apply in yoga poses. 



Tips For Using Your Paddle Board



#1: Make sure you’re using your paddle the correct way.

It took me a while to figure this one out. I thought you would “scoop” the water, but the best way to use your paddle for maximum effectiveness is to turn it the other way around. It reduces fatigue and increases your strokes ability to pick up speed. 


#2: Also make sure you’re facing the right way.

It may seem like this should be obvious…but actually, when you’re first starting out, it probably won’t be. Find where the fins are located underneath and make sure they are at the rear, and you’ll be facing the correct way!


#3: To increase stability, always look towards the horizon.

When standing up on the board, do not look down. You want to keep your paddle across the board and keep your eyes upwards straight at the horizon. Place one foot on the board, then the other in a wide stance. Think about tight rope walkers…


#4: Always keep an eye on weather conditions before heading out.

Sometimes the wind picks up when you’re out there, and it makes it extremely difficult to maintain your balance, especially if you are coming back in against the tide. I recommend that you sit down on the board and adjust your paddle to paddle from a sitting position. You are more stable this way. Remember to use the included ankle leash so if you do fall off your board doesn’t get away from you.
